Pablo Ganet struck four minutes from time to give Equatorial Guinea an unlikely victory that saw them go level on 10 points with Tunisia with only one match remaining.
With only the group winners advancing to the final two-legged playoff, Equatorial Guinea will need to beat Mauritania away and hope Tunisia stumble at home to Zambia, who are third on seven points, in the final round on Tuesday.
A similar exciting race unfolded in Group C after both Nigeria and Cape Verde recorded precious wins.
Leaders Nigeria defeated Liberia 2-0 away, thanks to two penalties from Napoli striker Victor Osimhen (15 minutes) and Turkish based striker Ahmed Musa (in stoppage time).
Challengers Cape Verde kept up the fight with a 2-1 comeback victory over Central Africa.
Isaac Ngoma fired the visitors in front after 11 minutes but Julio Tavares drew Cape Verde level six minutes after the restart.
Stopira scored the winner on 75 minutes as Cape Verde remained two points behind Nigeria, who have 12 points, before their decisive clash on Tuesday.
Cape Verde must beat Nigeria to leapfrog them into a place in the March playoffs.
