Hosts Qatar win, Tunisia thrash Mauritania 5-1 in opening day of FIFA Arab Cup

Hosts Qatar kicked off their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bahrain while Tunisia thrashed Mauritania 5-1 in the opening day of the FIFA Arab Cup on Tuesday.

Al Rayyan midfielder Abdulaziz Hatem scored the winner for Qatar nine minutes past the hour mark.

In the other Group A game, Iraq scored deep in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw with Oman.

Salaah Al-Yahyaei converted a penalty on 78 minutes to fire Oman in front, only for Hasan Abdulkareem to equalise via another spot-kick eight minutes into the additional time.

Tunisia opened their Group B campaign in style, with a double from Zamalek striker Seifeddine Jaziri helping them to a comprehensive victory over Mauritania.

Jaziri opened the scoring on 39 minutes and added a third in the first-half's stoppage time after Mohamed Firas Ben Larbi had doubled Tunisia's advantage.

Mauritania's Cheikh El Khalil Moulaye pulled one back from the spot but Larbi scored again to make it 4-1 on 51 minutes before substitute Youssef Msakni completed the rout in stoppage time.

The United Arab Emirates take on Syria in the other Group B game later on Tuesday.
