The unfancied DR Congo, roared on by a passionate crowd at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, took a surprise lead after 12 minutes.

Yoane Wissa cut inside from the left and sent a shot that took a wicked deflection off Morocco defender Romain Saiss to wrong-foot the keeper.

Morocco had a golden chance to go level when they were awarded a penalty 10 minutes into the second half, only for Ryan Mmaee to blaze his effort high over.

Substitute winger Tarik Tissoudali made amends though after finding the net following a well-worked move in the 76th minute, just six minutes following his introduction.

A long ball found Ayoub El Kaabi inside the area, with the striker superbly heading the ball back to the unmarked Tissoudali to volley home.

DR Congo finished with ten men after Ngonda Muzinga was sent off for a second bookable offence five minutes from time.

Morocco will be favouites to reach the World Cup for a second consecutive time when they host DR Congo in Casablanca in the second leg on Tuesday.
