Maaloul has penned a two-year contract that will link him with the club until the summer of 2024.
He will replace Radhi Jaidi, who lost his job on Wednesday due to the team’s poor results.
Maaloul, an Esperance icon, has had previous experience with the team (2010-2013), helping them win the CAF Champions League in 2011.
He was with Tunisia in the 2018 World Cup when the Carthage Eagles were eliminated from the competition’s first round.
He also took charge of Qatari side Al-Duhil, Syrian national team and the Kuwaiti side Kuwait.
