African stars misfire across Europe

Even usually deadly finisher Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon could not find the net on a fruitless weekend for African strikers across Europe

There were no African goals in the English Premiership, Bundesliga, Serie A or La Liga while Senegalese Malick Faye and Malian Mamoudou Daffe hit the target for fifth-tier clubs in the French Cup.

The African presence in the Premiership could be bolstered this month as Senegalese Demba Ba of Hoffenheim has been linked with a loan move to relegation-threatened West Ham.

ENGLAND

KOLO TOURE/YAYA TOURE (Manchester City)

The Ivorian brothers had a frustrating time as Manchester City suffered a dent to their title ambitions with a 1-0 defeat at struggling Aston Villa.

ASAMOAH GYAN (Sunderland)

With Darren Bent sold and Danny Welbeck injured, it was left to Ghana striker Gyan to provide the cutting edge for the Black Cats against Blackpool. Kieran Richardson got the goals, however, in a 2-1 win.

JOHN PANTSIL (Fulham)

The Ghana defender was more than a match for Stoke's attack at Craven Cottage as Fulham kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win.

STEVEN PIENAAR (Tottenham)

The South Africa midfielder had a low-key debut for Spurs after joining from Everton last week. Pienaar was substituted after 83 minutes and was not on the field when Spurs grabbed their late equaliser.

FRANCE

MALICK FAYE (Chambery)

The Senegalese striker helped fifth-tier Chambery continue their unlikely tilt at French Cup glory after his goal took the last-32 match against top-flight Brest to extra-time and the amateurs won the shootout.

MAMOUDOU DAFFE (Agen)

The Malian defender did his best to provide a shock against PSG, heading in for 1-1 for the fifth-tier club after 41 minutes. But his sterling efforts could not prevent an honourable 3-2 loss.

GERMANY

PAPISS DEMBA CISSE (Freiburg)

The Senegal striker missed a 1-1 draw with Nuremberg with a groin injury which threatens to keep him out for up to three weeks. In his absence, Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez became joint Bundesliga top-scorer with Cisse after his hat-trick for the defending champions.

CHADLI AMRI (Kaiserslautern)

The Algerian midfielder came off the bench in the 66th minute at defending champions Bayern Munich, but was powerless to prevent his side losing 5-1 at the Allianz Arena.

DEMBA BA (Hoffenheim)

The Senegal striker looks set to join Premier League strugglers West Ham on loan until the end of the season after a potential transfer to Stoke City collapsed. The 25-year-old fell out with Bundesliga side Hoffenheim recently when he refused to attend a training camp at the start of January, but a transfer to Stoke fell through when he failed a medical examination.

ITALY

SAMUEL ETO'O (Inter Milan)

The Cameroon striker, who went into the weekend with 12 league goals to his name, cut a frustrated figure as Inter slumped to a shock 3-1 defeat against Udinese. Goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was on hand to charge down Eto'o's best effort of the game.

KWADWO ASAMOAH (Udinese)

Ghana international Asamoah played pivotal role in Udinese's third goal which killed off Inter. He collected a poor clearance and crossed for Maurizio Domizzi to volley home in the 63rd minute.

HASSAN YEBDA (Napoli)

The Algeria midfielder came on as a substitute for the second week in succession in his team's 2-0 win at Bari which kept Napoli firmly in title contention in second place behind AC Milan. He replaced Marek Hamsik, who had returned from suspension, in the 63rd minute.

SPAIN

KALU UCHE (Almeria)

Nigeria midfielder Uche helped struggling Almeria defeat Osasuna 3-2 to move off the bottom of the Spanish La Liga table. The 28-year-old started the match and played a key role as Almeria recorded their first home league win of the season ahead of Wednesday's Kings Cup semi-final against Barcelona.

KOFFI ROMARIC (Sevilla)

Ivory Coast midfielder Romaric played the entire match and set up a goal as Sevilla thrashed Levante 4-1. He delivered a pinpoint corner for centre-back Julien Escude to head home on 38 minutes as Sevilla ran out convincing winners ahead of Wednesday's Kings Cup semi-final showdown with Real Madrid.
