CAF president to launch African Super League on Wednesday

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Patrice Motsepe will launch the new tournament “African Super League” on Wednesday, the African football governing body announced on Monday.

“The launch will be live in Arusha International Conference Centre, Tanzania at 13:00 Eastern African Time (EAT)/ 12:00 Cairo time/ 10:00 GMT on several TV networks in Africa and other parts of the world including CAF streaming platforms, CAFTV (YouTube),” reads a statement on CAF’s official website.

On 3 July, the CAF president announced that the launch of the anticipated tournament will be in August 2022, while the kick-off will be in August 2023 with prize money of $100 million.

“The competition will breathe new life into African club competition. Winners and participants of the inaugural African Super League will receive significant prize monies and the proceeds from the tournament will include substantial solidarity payments to all 54 CAF member associations,” CAF said in a statement at the time.

The official name of the new competition will be unveiled at the launch event.

The African Cup of Nations, CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup are the current major tournaments organised by the CAF.
