The 60-year-old coach apologized for the supporters after the team's poor performance and acknowledging the disappointment of the fans.

"I aknowledge the fans' sadness after this difficult loss and I apologize to them for not bringing them happiness yesterday," Maaloul wrote on his Facebook account on Saturday.

"I have decided to hand in my resignation to the club's chairman," Maaloul added.

Esperance has struggled in their last four matches across all competitions.

Currently, they are fifth in the Tunisian league table with 11 points after playing six games this season in the playoff round.

They are also close to being eliminated from the CAF Champions League semifinals after losing the first leg at home.

"The mission was not easy in the previous games for some reasons that need time to be explained. I did my best to find solutions to overcome such circumstances, but in the end we could not do it," he concluded.

Maaloul, who previously coached the Tunisia national team, took charge of Esperance in June 2022 and helped them win the Tunisian League title last season.
