Defender Zineddine Belaid succeeded in converting a penalty in the 42nd minute, sealing the 1-0 victory for Algerian side USM Alger, winners of the CAF Confederation Cup against the reigning CAF Champions League winners, Ahly on Friday.
“It was a game of a high rhythm. We dealt with the match realistically and we wish the best luck to the club of the century [Ahly],” Benchikha said in the press conference after the game.
“We were organized to stop Ahly’s danger and we managed to dominate despite the continuous pressure of the opponents. We deserve both beating Ahly and winning the Super Cup title,” added the Algerian coach who had said before the game that Ahly were the favourites on paper to win the title.
USM Alger clinched their first-ever Super Cup title, while Ahly, the Cairo giants, were aiming to retain the title for the ninth time.
