Wydad, who had eliminated TP Mazembe on away goals in the last four, took the lead four minutes before the break when Montasser Lahtimi's cross from the right was turned into the net by Rivaldo Coetzee.

Sundowns, who had beaten Ahly 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-final, were awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute after a VAR review showed that Wydad defender Yahia Jabrane handled the ball in the box. Boutouil stepped up and scored the equaliser.

However, Wydad restored their lead in the 79th minute, when Anas Serrhat fired a powerful shot from the edge of the box past keeper Ronwen Williams.

Wydad almost added a third in the closing stages, but Hamdou Elhouni's long-range effort hit the crossbar.

The second leg will be played in Pretoria on 12 November.
