Esperance beat Etoile du Sahel to put a leg in CAF Champions League quarterfinals

Tunisian powerhouse Esperance displayed their dominance by securing a 2-0 win over fellow countrymen Etoile du Sahel in the fifth round of the CAF Champions League group stage on Saturday.

With this victory, Esperance has firmly positioned themselves on the cusp of qualifying for the prestigious tournament's quarterfinals.

They currently sit in second place in Group C, boasting eight points after five rounds, just one point behind group leaders Petro Atletico de Luanda from Angola.

Esperance wasted no time asserting their authority, with Yan Sasse opening the scoring in the 26th minute.

Zakaria El Ayeb then doubled their advantage a mere four minutes before halftime.

The race for the quarterfinal berths will be decided in the final round of the group stage, as Etoile Sportive du Sahel finds themselves at the bottom of Group C with four points, trailing one point behind third-placed Al-Hilal of Sudan.

The remaining fixtures for Group C teams will take place on March 2, with the teams anxiously awaiting the final day to determine their fate in the next round of the CAF Champions League.
