"The Board of Nigeria Football Federation approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as the Head Coach of the Senior Men's National Football Team, Super Eagles," read a statement from the NFF on Monday.

Finidi, who previously served as a Super Eagles assistant coach for around 20 months, will replace Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, who left his post following Nigeria's second-place finish in the previous Africa Cup of Nations.

After Peseiro's departure, Finidi served as the interim coach before his official appointment on Monday.

Finidi was a member of the Super Eagles' 'Golden Generation' that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia.

He also represented Nigeria in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.

Having led the Super Eagles as interim coach during two friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March, Finidi will officially begin his mission as manager in June when Nigeria faces South Africa and Benin in the World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria sit in third place in Group C with two points, trailing leaders Rwanda (four points) and South Africa (three points).
