Some Tunisian prisoners failed on Saturday to escape from prison after trying to take advantage of the euphoria that followed Esperance's qualification for the Champions League final.

Esperance defeated DR Congo champions TP Mazembe 1-0 on Saturday in Tunis in the second leg of the Champions League semis to reach the final with a 1-0 aggregate win.

According to local Tunisian reports, some prisoners started fire in Gabes prison in the South of the Tunisian capital, stirring chaos in an attempt to escape.

However, security forces and army personnel eventually managed to bring the situation under control, Tunisian radio Shams FM reported.
