CAF postpones African youth championship in Libya for security reasons

AFP, Thursday 3 Mar 2011

The African youth championship slated for Libya between March 18 and April 1 has been postponed because of the rebellion against the Moamer Kadhafi-led regime.

A statement from African governing body CAF in Cairo Thursday said security concerns and an unstable political situation led to the decision and a new host nation and dates would be announced soon.

World champions Ghana, Cameroon, Egypt, Gambia, Lesotho, Mali, Nigeria and hosts Libya were scheduled to play in capital Tripoli and second city Benghazi, which fell under rebel control several weeks ago.

Algeria, who were awarded the 2013 youth championship, have proposed taking over with Libya replacing them in two years. South Africa have also been mentioned as possible hosts.
