Heavyweights TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo  were eliminated from the African Champions League at the last-16 stage despite beating South Africa's Orlando Pirates 1-0 on Sunday.

The four-time African champions, winners of the elite competition in 2009 and 2010, bowed out with a 3-2 aggregate defeat after losing the first leg 3-1 in South Africa.

Mazembe's Jean Kasusula scored his side's only goal in the 72nd minute, which was not enough to lift them to the group stage.

They will now have to settle for a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, Africa's secondary club competition.

The draw for the Champions League group stage will be made in Cairo on Tuesday.
