Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyanteyie defends Michael Essien’s decision to be excused from Ghana duties and insists that the player is loyal to his country

The Chelsea midfielder is under fire since he turned down the option to play for the Black Stars against Congo in the African Cup of Nations' qualifier and against England in a friendly game scheduled this month.

Essien was severely criticized, and several voices called for him to be kicked off the Ghana squad permanently.

But the GFA boss says that is wrong to judge the player’s attitude before listening to his arguments.

"We have to sit down with him and listen to what he has to say," Nyantekyie told Asempa FM.

"We need to find out what his problems are. Some people have said we should forget about him but for me that is too early. He is human and may have issues so I don't want to judge him now," he added.

"We are playing in England and he plays there so it will be a good time to sit down and talk to him. It is too early to suggest he does not want to play for Ghana again. He has played for Ghana since he was a teenager and let us not forget he picked up two serious injuries in a Ghana shirt.

"I am eager to hear from him himself because what I know I have read from the Internet and newspapers, but as things stand now I am confident he will play for the country again.”

Essien hasn't featured for Ghana since 15 January 2010, when he picked up a serious knee injury against Ivory Coast that sidelined him for six months.

The 28-year old midfielder asked to be temporarily excused from Ghana duties but he hasn’t fixed a date for his return.
