CAF chief Issa Hayatou and UEFA counterpart Michel Platini sign a cooperation deal during a Thursday news conference in Cairo
Issa Hayatou said on Thursday African governing body CAF is ‘always safe in Egypt’, adding that the federation’s top officials did not face any problems during a visit to Cairo to sign a cooperation deal with UEFA chief Michel Platini.
Speaking to a news conference at CAF’s Cairo headquarters on Thursday, Hayatou said he appreciated the efforts of Egyptian authorities to secure the CAF delegation.
“All the officials are fully secured on their way from and to the airport. We have never faced any security-related problems,” Hayatou said in French, speaking via an interpreter.
“The CAF is always safe here. I should thank the Egyptian authorities for that.”
Egypt has been plunged into turmoil since the army deposed President Mohamed Morsi in July last year following mass protests against his rule.
Domestic football was resumed late last year following a five-month stoppage but Egyptian Premier League games are being played behind closed doors.
A limited number of supporters have been lately allowed to attend matches for Cairo duo Ahly and Zamalek in the CAF Champions League, Africa’s premier club competition.
