Mainz have signed Chilean striker Nicolas Castillo from Belgian club FC Bruges on loan until the end of the season, manager Christian Heidel said on Wednesday.

The deal includes an option for the German club to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Castillo, 21, has been with Bruges since last January and this season has scored eight goals in 18 matches in the Belgian league.

Mainz, 12th in the Bundesliga table, have lacked firepower upfront in the first half of the season, having scored just 19 goals in 17 matches. They resume after the winter break at home to 10th-placed Paderborn on Saturday.
