Full time: Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

The referee blows his final whistle, Barcelona are now in pole position to reach the Champions League last eight

90+4' Messi wastes the penalty!! Joe Hart blocks his effort and he heads wide from the rebound. What an exciting end to the game!

90+3' Zabaleta's needless tackle brings down Messi just before the final whistle!!

90+3' PENALTY FOR BARCELONA!!

90' Messi finds the net!! But his effort is ruled out for offside after he was found by a Neymar pass.

90' City's Fernando is also booked.

88' Barca substitute Adriano is booked for a foul on Aguero.

87' City are defending doggedly to maintain a slim chance of causing an upset in the return leg.

84' Barceloana seem determined to score the third in the dying minutes.

80' The final substitution for Barcelona. Pedro replaces Neymar.

79' City look more focused on not conceding again rather than trying to level the score, given their numerical disadvantage.

78' The final substitution for City. David Silva is replaced with full-back Bacary Sagna.

77' A chance for Barcelona in the end-to-end clash! Messi's shot deflects off Kompany and loops goalwards but Hart tips it over.

76' Jordi Alba falls under an apparent challenge from Kompany but his penalty appeal is waved away. Television replays show there was no contact between both men.

75' Barca make their second substitution. Alves is replaced with Brazilian Adriano.

74' City's hopes suffer a blow! Clichy is sent off for a second yellow card after a challenge on Dani Alves.

71' Barcelona make their first substitution. Defender Jeremy Mathieu replaces central midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

69' What a brilliant move! Fernandinho makes an instant impact, sending a through ball to David Silva whose superb back-heel pass finds Aguero. The Argentinean holds off his challenger and fires home from inside the area.

69' GOAL FOR MAN CITY!!

68' The second substitution for City. Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony, the January arrival, replaces Eden Dzeko.

65' Barcelona go close!! Rakitic's pressure allows him to steal possession on the edge of the City area. He finds Suarez, whose over-hit cross is brilliantly controlled by Messi. The Argentinean's cross is intercepted however as City clear the danger.

63' The second half is evenly-balanced, but City are really unlucky not to at least narrow the deficit.

61' City make their first substitution. Holding midfielder Fernandinho replaces Samir Nasri.

59' The first yellow card for City is given to left-back Gael Clichy for a foul on Rakitic. He will miss the second leg at the Nou Camp.

57' A tame close-range header from Demichelis is easily collected by Ter Stegen after a free-kick.

54' But it's City who squander another clear-cut chance! Aguero holds off Mascherano and sends a curling shot from the edge of the area that goes just wide.

53' Barca gradually regain control.

49' Dzeko heads straight into the keeper's hands with the goal at his mercy! City come with all guns blazing in the second half.

49' City are unlucky not to open the scoring!! David Silva finds Nasri with a low cross but the Frenchman's shot is blocked by a superb tackle from Javier Mascherano.

48' Another chance for City!! Dzeko's glancing header from a left-wing cross narrowly misses the target.

47' Manchester City have a mountain to climb.

46' A Dzeko flick fells on the feet of Fernando but he fails to control it as the Barca defence clears.

The second half is underway

The referee blows his halftime whistle

45+1' Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen parries a low shot from Samir Nasri as the hosts pile on pressure in the latter stages of the first half.

45' Another yellow card for Barca! Alves is booked for a challenge on Sergio Aguero.

44' Dani Alves is denied by the bar!! He jinks into the area following a darting run and his chip strikes the woodwork.

41' Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic receives a yellow card.

41' Clichy sends a cross horribly wide after a rare attacking attempt from City.

40' Kompany makes a timely interception to thwart the darting Messi inside the area.

39' Man City's defenders are left chasing shadows as Barca put on an entertaining display.

36' Another chance for Barcelona!! Messi is found by a trademark deft pass and he gets the better of Martin Demichelis but Hart is on alert this time to thwart him.

36' Barcelona are in total control. They are likely to increase the gap.

32' Barca almost 3-0 up!! Neymar breaks clear but his lob is cleared off the line by Kompany.

31' Barca are firing on all cylinders as Suarez notches his second of the night! Messi skips past a couple of challengers and finds Jordi Alba with a threaded pass. The left-back then sends a low cross that is met with a sliding effort from Suarez, who loses his marker to find the bottom corner.

30' GOAL FOR BARCELONA!!!

29' Barca's possession-based style of play is on full display tonight!

26' Suarez wastes a golden chance to score his second of the night!! He breaks clear after a deft through pass from Neymar but he shoots straight into the body of advancing keeper Joe Hart.

23' Barcelona are moving the ball around very well. Manchester City's defenders are struggling to closely mark the fearsome attacking trio.

21' At the other end, Eden Dzeko towers to meet a cross with a tame header that goes wide of the post.

20' Suarez controls another cross on the left hand side of the penalty area but his pass is cleared by the defence.

19' Man City push forward in a bid to level the score. But Barca look composed at the back.

16' Kompany miscues his clearance following a Messi cross from the right and Luis Suarez pounces to hit an angled shot into the bottom corner from a narrow angle. Barca deservedly go ahead!

16' GOAL FOR BARCELONA!!!

14' Barcelona look lively tonight.

13' The first genuine chance for Barcelona! Suarez's cross is intercepted by the defence but the ball falls to him again. His subsequent volley hits the side netting from inside the area.

11' What a superb piece of skill from Neymar! He receives a pass on the left hand side of the penalty area with a superb feint to get the better of Zabaleta before finding Messi, whose shot strikes a defender from a tight angle.

9' Aguero's free-kick strikes the wall.

8' Aguero is awarded a free-kick after being felled by Mascherano. Neymar is to blame, however, after surrendering possession to Pablo Zabaleta in the middle of the pitch.

6' Dzeko receives a long ball after nipping in between two markers, swivels and tries his luck but his shot deflects off a defender for a corner.

5' Jordi Alba runs down the left but his mis-hit cross goes out for a goal kick.

3' Barcelona look to dominate possession in the early stages.

2' Man City defender Kompany makes a superb interception to clear a long ball from Messi just before it reaches Neymar in the area.

The match is underway

Manchester City's starting line-up: Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis, Gael Clichy, Fernando, James Milner, Samir Nasri, David Silva, Eden Dzeko, Sergio Aguero

Barcelona's starting line-up: Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Jordi Alba, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi

21:30 Fifteen minutes remaining before kick-off, players are ready to step onto the pitch.

20:55 Barcelona stick to their normal line-up that includes fearsome attacking trio Neymar, Suarez and Messi.

20:45 James Milner is set to partner Fernando in the heart of City's midfield due to the absence of Yaya Toure. Two established strikers will start in Sergio Aguero and Eden Dzeko.

20:15 Toure's absence might be crucial tonight. When he was away on international duty at the African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, where he helped Ivory Coast win the title, City suffered from a poor run in the Premier League.

19:45 Two hours remaining before kick-off. Excitement is building before the game!

19:15 City's run to the last 16 a year ago was their best effort in the competition after two successive failures to survive the group stage and they will be buoyed by the way they sneaked into the knockout round this time, beating Bayern Munich and AS Roma.

18:45 "You can admire and respect them so long as that doesn't transmit into giving them too much space to do what they do best," City midfielder Lampard said of Barcelona.

18:15 Barca defender Gerard Pique said: "City are a team that is more attack-minded and that will help us as it will be a more open game. We need to put the defeat by Malaga behind us because on Tuesday we face the most important game of the year."

17:45 After finding their creative edge blunted in recent months, City's attacking flair returned with a vengeance as they crushed Newcastle United 5-0 in the Premier League on Saturday. In contrast, Barca's lethal-looking frontline misfired badly at the weekend as their 11-match unbeaten run ended in a surprise 1-0 defeat by a well-drilled Malaga side.

17:15 Manchester City will have to do without midfield workhorse Yaya Toure as he completes a three-match suspension for his red card against CSKA Moscow.

16:20 City manager Pellegrini believes it could be different this time against Barcelona: his team is fresher - owing to early exits in both domestic cup competitions this season - and has gained more experience in Europe.

16:00 Barca centre back Gerard Pique said he expected a similar match on Tuesday to last season's first leg in Manchester, when a Lionel Messi penalty and a Dani Alves goal secured a 2-0 win.

15:30 Barca, the 2009 and 2011 winners, are through to the last 16 of Europe's elite club competition for the 11th season in a row, while City are appearing there for only the second time.

15:00 Before Saturday's 1-0 loss to Malaga, Barcelona had won 11 consecutive games in all competitions to bring an end to a worrying period that featured below-par performances and speculation about a falling-out between Messi and Enrique.

14:30 So what has changed in the last 12 months? Barcelona has a different coach in Luis Enrique, an improved strikeforce after Luis Suarez joined Lionel Messi and Neymar, but perhaps a less dominant midfield as the impact of Xavi Hernandez starts to wane.

13:30 City, 5-0 winners at home to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday, were boosted on Tuesday with the news that midfield trojan James Milner has shaken off an injury and manager Pellegrini was upbeat about his side's prospects.

12:30 For the English champions, there's also the matter of avenging an exit at the hands of Barcelona at the same stage last season, when losses in both legs of the last 16 - for a 4-1 aggregate defeat - demonstrated the gulf between the clubs.

12:00 Barcelona's passage to an eighth straight Champions League quarterfinal could be blocked by a Manchester City team desperate to end three years of underachievement in the competition.

Stay tuned as match is due to start at 21:45 Cairo time (19:45 GMT)

Venue: City of Manchester Stadium (Manchester)
