Done up Gulf-style with modern, bright, creative stadia designs, Qatar aims to compliment the aesthetics with conscious innovations that prevent waste

Qatar has already attracted plenty of attention for the futuristic and colourful designs of its dozen proposed World Cup stadiums— including one shaped like a traditional Arabic fishing boat and another like a sea urchin

But the architects of the tiny Gulf nation’s stadiums have looked to do more than just design attractive venues for 2022 event.

At a stadium conference in Doha this week, architects detailed plans for nine of the 12 venues to include modular components that will allow organisers to remove as many as 170,000 seats and send them to 22 locations in the developing world.

They said the initiative was aimed at insuring there would be a legacy left behind from the event so as to avoid creating the “white elephants” left over after other World Cups and Olympic Games.
