Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho threw his medal to an Arsenal supporter because he does not keep runner-up accolades, he said following his club's narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Arsene Wenger finally ended his Mourinho hoodoo, having failed to beat the Portuguese in 13 previous meetings – thanks to a superb Alex Oxlade Chamberlain strike in the first half.

Given their tense relationship, Mourinho expectedly did not shake hands with Wenger after the game. He instead greeted the Arsenal team just before throwing his second-place medal towards the Gunners' stands.

"I don't keep runner-up medals so I threw it to an Arsenal supporter," Mourinho said in the post-match press conference.

English Premier League holders Chelsea will start the defense of their title against Swansea City next week.
