Frank Lampard was ruled out of New York City's clash with Los Angeles Galaxy here Sunday, scuppering hopes of a midfield battle between the Chelsea legend and former Liverpool rival Steven Gerrard.
Lampard, who has suffered from a series of niggling injuries since beginning his Major League Soccer career, was not included in either City's starting line-up or the substitutes bench for the game at the StubHub Center.
City new signing Andrea Pirlo was named in midfield, with former Spain and Barcelona striker David Villa skippering New York in attack.
Gerrard meanwhile was named to the Galaxy's starting line-up, partnering Juninho in midfield behind a front two of captain Robbie Keane and Giovani Dos Santos.
