Ajax defender Kenny Tete was arrested earlier this month after a brawl in Amsterdam and is to appear before a judge in January, Dutch prosecutors said Monday.

Tete "is being charged with threatening police officers and resisting arrest," a spokeswoman for the prosecution service, Loes Gerrits, told AFP.

The player for current Dutch league leaders Ajax was arrested on the night of December 5 to 6, and is due to appear before a judge on January 27.

According to Dutch media, the 20-year-old was held after a fight in one of the city's coffee-shops where marajuana is legally bought and consumed.

"After the Ajax match against Heerenveen, there was a fight in the city, in which he apparently became involved," the club said, quoted by the Dutch news agency ANP.

"The club will not take any action as long as no evidence has been produced about what happened and until a verdict is given."

Tete has also played two matches for the Dutch national team.
