A Swiss court has dismissed FC Sion’s attempt to be reinstated in the Europa League a week after UEFA threw the club out for fielding ineligible players.

A regional court in Martigny on Thursday rejected the Swiss side’s appeal on the grounds that it didn’t have jurisdiction over the case.

Sion president Christian Constantin had requested a provisional reinstatement before the Europa League group stage kicks off on 15 September.

UEFA’s disciplinary panel upheld Celtic’s protest that Sion selected five players signed during the offseason, in breach of a FIFA transfer embargo, in last month’s two playoff-round matches between the two teams.

FIFA banned Sion from registering new players in 2011 after it induced goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary to break his contract with Egyptian club Al-Ahly in 2008.
