Atlanta United stands atop the MLS following Saturday night's 2-1 win on the road against the Montreal Impact, and one needs to look no further than Josef Martinez to see why.

Martinez, by far the leading goal scorer in MLS, scored twice to lead Atlanta to the win. Atlanta (14-4-5, 47 points) kept its lead in the Eastern Conference, as well as the top mark overall in the MLS.

Montreal (9-13-1, 28 points) saw its five-game home winning streak come to an end.

Atlanta led 1-0 at the half, and following a one-hour weather delay at the half, United made it 2-0 with Martinez picking a garbage goal in the 57th minute.

Franco Escobar and Julian Gressel both used hard work to have solid chances in the Montreal box, but both shots were denied. However, the loose ball rolled to Martinez, who deflected it home for his second of the game.

Ignacio Piatti scored a late goal for Montreal to provide the final margin.

Martinez increased his season goal total to 24, easily the best in the league. It could be a season of historic proportions for Martinez as the goal moved him within three of the MLS single-season record of 27, done by three players.

With 11 games left to play, Martinez is on pace not just to set the record but obliterate the mark.

Martinez made it 1-0 Atlanta in the 31st minute.

Hector Villalba took a long ball down the left side before hitting a cross into the middle. Martinez made an adjustment with the ball in the area, creating some space before heading it home from eight yards out.

It was the ninth straight road game with a goal for Martinez and the sixth straight game overall where he has scored.
