Premier League strugglers Wigan and Blackburn were the topflight casualties in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday with Tottenham and Everton avoiding major upsets against low-ranking opposition in world football’s oldest knockout competition.
Argentinian midfielder Jonas Gutierrez scored a stoppage-time winner as Newcastle snatched a 2-1 victory over Blackburn in the day’s only all-Premier League match.
Fourth-tier club Swindon came from behind to beat Wigan 2-1 at the County Ground, while Queens Park Rangers narrowly avoided joining the Premier League’s bottom two in being eliminated after scoring late in a 1-1 draw at MK Dons.
Tottenham eased past fourth-tier side Cheltenham 3-0 and Everton won 2-0 against Tamworth, one of three non-league teams to go out.
