Australian Open champion Li Na advanced to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open by beating Sloane Stephens 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.
The second-ranked Li overcame a slew of unforced errors and a poor opening set to advance.
Li lost in the first round on the Magic Box clay last year.
