Tennis: Djokovic advances to second round after opponent retires

World number one Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday when his opponent, Conor Niland of Ireland, retired sick while trailing 6-0 5-1

Niland, the first Irishman ever to make the main draw of the U.S. Open, called it quits after just 44 minutes. He had been suffering from food poisoning even before the match began and was unable to muster any real challenge to the tournament favourite.

But after losing four more games, Niland threw in the towell. Djokovic will next play either Pere Riba of Spain or Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.
