Ahly senior handball team coach Assem Hammad has praised the performance of his team's players after they beat Zamalek 29-23 in the African Handball Super Cup late Wednesday, winning the title for the first time in the tournament's history.

"Ahly deserved to win the African Super Cup title due to the players' superb performance during preparations for the game," Hammad was quoted as saying on the club's official website after the game.

Ahly defeated Cup Winner's Cup winners Zamalek in the Super Cup final in Morocco this week.

Ahly took an early lead over Zamalek during the game, managing to finish the first half at 15-12 before ending the game with a 6 point lead over their rivals.

Zamalek, who have achieved the African Super Cup title four times, suffered the absence of Egypt national team star Ahmed El-Ahmar who was injured during international duty.

"It's great for the players to represent Ahly in the IHF Super Globe," the Ahly coach added.

"I promise Ahly fans we will achieve the Cup Winners' Cup title that kicks off on Thursday," Hammad concluded.
