Ferrer is making his 10th straight appearance at the Australian Open and has played in 37 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since his first major at Melbourne Park in January 2003.
His best Grand Slam finishes have been two semifinals—at the last Australian Open and at the 2007 U.S. Open.
Ferrer will next play Juan Ignacio Chela, who beat Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
