In a star-studded Gala dinner held in Budapest, Hungary, Egyptian pentathlete Ahmed El-Gendy was named the UIPM Best Junior Athlete in 2019 for his spectacular performances and remarkable results in the sport throughout the year.

Earlier this year, he won two gold medals at the seniors world cup which was held in Egypt, in both the individual and mixed relay events.

The Egyptian pentathlete beat Mexico's Emiliano Hernandez and Belarus Ivan Khamtsan for the title.

"I am so glad and proud to win this award for the second year in a row. It means a lot to me because it is a recognition of how I have been working so hard to maintain my same level," El-Gendy told Ahram Online.

"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me, the Egyptian minister of sports, my coaches and teammates, sponsors and fans, and most importantly, I would like to thank all those who have voted for me," he added.

The 2019 UIPM Awards were held on the sidelines of the World Juniors Laser Run Championships and the World Senior Championships which were held from 1 to 8 September.

In the Best Teams Award, Egypt was named as second best to Russia while Hungary came in third.
