Andy Murray overcame an error-strewn performance to beat German qualifier Michael Berrer 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round of the Dubai Championships on Tuesday.
Murray, playing his first match since losing to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals, looked ragged.
The third-seeded Murray lost his opening service game, but broke back twice to claim the first set.
Berrer dominated the second set, breaking the Brit twice to force a decider.
Both players broke twice to make it 2-2 in the third, but Murray broke a third time to go up 5-2 and won the match when Berrer returned long.
