Egypt's handball team is just one step away from reaching the 2020 African Men's Handball Championship semi-finals after defeating Gabon 36-17 on Monday in their first match of the quarter final in Tunisia.

The Pharaohs dominated the game from the beginning, ending the first half with a 20-7 victory.

Egypt ended its group stage campaign on a high note after securing three successive wins over Guinea, Kenya and DR Congo respectively.

The Pharaohs qualified for the quarters of the 24th edition of the championship as the Group A leaders with six points.

Egypt will face Angola in the remaining match of the quarters on Wednesday.

The African Championship started with the participation of 16 teams divided into four groups. The first and second-placed teams in each group qualified for the quarter-finals.

The winner will qualify directly for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while the runner-up will enter the world play-offs to win a seat at the Olympics.

Egypt has won the title six times and has been runner-up six times. Host Tunisia has won the most titles, and is the current reigning champion.
