Egyptian Olympic Committee official Sherif El-Erian announced Sunday that they aim to win five medals during their participation in the 2020 Olympic Games that are scheduled to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo.
"Egypt’s delegation to the Olympic Games will consist of 250 members, as we qualified to compete in 24 events," El-Erian told a radio programme early on Sunday.
"We have 20 players who are competitive in their games, so we intend to win 5 medals," the Egyptian Olympic Committee official said.
In weightlifting, we have Mohamed Ihab who is qualified to compete for a gold or silver medal, while Sara Samir is expected to compete for third or fourth place, he said
"There is no guarantee in other sports – like Taekwondo and Karate – that we will secure a medal, as it depends on the draw and the games itself," El-Erian said, adding that Egypt "could still claim more than five medals" depending on the readiness of the competitors.
Regarding the Egyptian football team, he said no one can promise a victory over Argentina as "there is no guarantee in sports."
"The delegation could return to Cairo with zero medals and it would be a disappointment, but this is sports," El-Erian said.
The 2020 Olympic games is an international multi-sport event scheduled to take place behind closed doors next month in Japan.
It was originally due to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020 but it was postponed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
