Egypt miss out on a place in the second round after embarrassing defeat by Spain

Egypt failed to reach the main round of the Handball World Championship after suffering a humiliating 31-18 loss to Spain in Sweden on Wednesday.

The Pharaohs were neck and neck with Spain in the early stages but the latter gained the upper hand once the score became tied at 6-6.

The Europeans led 14-9 by halftime, thanks to an inspirational display from towering player Ruben Garabaya.

They widened the gap in the second half to win 31-18 and dismantle the Egyptians, whose lack of experience apparently prevented them from making a good impression at the World Championship.

Egypt, who lost to France and Germany before defeating Tunisia in their previous games, lie fifth in Group A with two points.

Tunisia, who are fourth, need to beat Germany by more than a five-goal difference on Thursday to advance to the main round.

The first three teams in the group will go through.
