Modern Pentathlon: Host Egypt wins gold at UIPM World Cup I

Egypt's penathletes won gold medal at the mixed relay competitions on the final day at the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup I in Cairo on Sunday.

The six-day contest, which was held at the American University in Cairo (AUC), is the first this season to be played under modern pentathlon's new format.

Egypt's Salma Abdel-Maksoud and Mohanad Shaban snatched gold with a total of 1359 points while Great Britain's Ross Chartlon and Jessica Varley took silver with 1341 points. Turkey's Bugra Unal and Ilke Ozyuksel claimed the bronze medal with1333 points.

Both the women and men finals are held on the same day, featuring the best 18 athletes in each final.

“In the individual event, I qualified for the semi-final but couldn’t reach the final. In the mixed replay event, I am very happy with this victory. My goal in the coming period is to collect points as much as I can to improve my world rankings to book a ticket to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games 2024,”  Abdel-Maksoud said

“It was a very tough tournament. Abdel-Maksoud and I were the youngest athletes but we were fortunate in Laser run which helped us move from fourth in the overall ranking to win the gold medal,” Shaban commented.

“We cannot evaluate the new format of the competition now. We have to wait until the end of the year, after competing in various championships, to give our say, he added.

All five disciplines take place at the AUC, with a five-minute walking distance separating the swimming, fencing bonus round, riding and laser run courses.

Men's final result

French modern penathlete Christopher Patte won the gold medal with a total 1,487 points -- 300 in riding, 220 in fencing, 291 in swimming and 676 in laser-run. 

Hungary's Csaba Bohm took silver with 1,481 points. He scored 300 in riding, 202 in fencing, 298 in swimming and 681 681in laser-run.

Hungarian Balazs Szep won bronze medal with a total 1,477 points -- 278 in riding, 225 in fencing,289 in swimming and 685 in laser-run.

Women's final result

Italian penathlete Elena Micheli won gold with a total 1,417 points -- 296 in riding, 243in fencing, 282 in swimming and 596 in laser run while Hungarian Michelle Gulyas took silver with a total of 1,412 points -- 300 riding, 240 in fencing, 274 in swimming, and 598 in laser run.

Great Britain's Emma Whitaker won bronze with a total of 1,384 points -- 300 in riding, 222 in fencing, 258 in swimming and 604 in laser run.

Hungary finished the day with three medals: two bronze and one silver.

Egypt will host the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships in July.

"UIPM's Executive Office voted unanimously for Egypt to organize the championship," said Sherif El-Arian, President of the Egyptian Modern pentathlon Federation.

"In April, we will select the host city, either Alexandria or Cairo, in coordination with the ministry of youth and sports an the Egyptian Olympic Committee."  

The second UIPM World Cup will take place in Hungary, Budapest from 26 April-1 May.
