Egypt's penathletes won gold medal at the mixed relay competitions on the final day at the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup I in Cairo on Sunday.

The six-day contest, which was held at the American University in Cairo (AUC), is the first this season to be played under modern pentathlon's new format.

Both the women and men finals are held on the same day, featuring the best 18 athletes in each final.

“In the individual event, I qualified for the semi-final but couldn’t reach the final. In the mixed replay event, I am very happy with this victory. My goal in the coming period is to collect points as much as I can to improve my world rankings to book a ticket to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games 2024,”  Abdel-Maksoud said

“It was a very tough tournament. Abdel-Maksoud and I were the youngest athletes but we were fortunate in Laser run which helped us move from fourth in the overall ranking to win the gold medal,” Shaban commented.

“We cannot evaluate the new format of the competition now. We have to wait until the end of the year, after competing in various championships, to give our say, he added.
