The Egyptian Handball Federation (EHF) has appointed Spanish coach Juan Carlos Pastor to replace his compatriot Roberto Parrondo as head coach of the Pharaohs, the EHF announced on Monday.

EHF Secretary-General Amr Salah said in a statement that Pastor has signed a one-year contract with the federation, which will expire after the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

"Our target from signing Pastor is to win a medal in the 2024 Olympic Games," Salah added.

Parrondo, who took charge of the Pharaohs in 2019, was let go after the team finished seventh at the World Championship for the second time in a row.

Parrondo's refusal to stop coaching a German team on the side was cited as the reason for his departure.

The EHF had been searching for a foreign, high-profile full-time coach following Parrondo's exit.

Veteran coach Pastor, 54, is a high-profile tactician, having led Spain to win the 2005 World Championship title in Tunisia during his tenure as head coach from 2004 to 2008.

He also guided Spain to the silver medal at Euro 2006 and the bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
