Egypt are determined to secure a spot in the Olympic Games in handball as they kick off their African Championship campaign in Cairo on Wednesday.

Handball: Egypt

They are set to face Guinea in the opening game, and they are in Group B alongside Congo and Cameroon.

Egypt are considered the favorite to advance to the next round, given the significant difference in quality between them and their group opponents, as well as the overall competition.

Tunisia are the only team that could pose a challenge to Egypt, but they are still within reach for the Egyptian national team.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals, and from there, the winners will qualify for the semifinals leading to the final, scheduled for January 27 in Cairo.

The Egyptian team is currently formidable, with high-level players, many of whom play in Europe.

Players like Yehya Khaled, Yehya Al-Deraa, Mohamed Sanad, and Hassan Kaddah contribute to the team's strength.

The team also boasts former Barcelona player Ali Zein, classy goalkeeper Karim Hindawi, and defensive duo Mohamed Mamdouh and Ibrahim Al-Masri.

With such talent, Egypt is considered a top contender for the title.

The team underwent several training camps in Egypt and participated in an international tournament in Denmark, where they finished in second place.

Spanish coach Juan Carlos Pastor expressed confidence in his players' preparation.

He faces the challenge of continuing the success of his predecessor, Roberto Parrondo, who led Egypt to the last two CAN titles in 2020 and 2022.

Egypt has won eight African titles, two behind Tunisia's record of 10 titles.

A victory in this tournament would bring them closer to Tunisia and further distance them from Algeria, who have won seven continental titles.

The Pharaohs are determined to win the African Championship and secure their spot in the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
