Egyptian squash star Ramy Ashour is now the new World Champion and World number one after winning a dramatic five-game final against compatriot Mohamed El-Shorbagy in the tournament final on Friday.

Ashour stepped up to his countryman El-Shorbagy, knocking him out of the first-ever all-Egyptian World Squash Championship final in Doha, Qatar with 3-2 (2/11, 11/6, 11/5, 9/11 and 11/8).

“This was an amazing match, with Shorbagy, you never know where the ball is going to go, unless you are reading his mind, which is not easy to achieve,” Ashour told reporters after the game.

“I’m so glad I’ve won this tournament, after coming back from injury, this is the best reward I could get,” he added.

“Shorbagy is such an amazing player, and we did Egypt proud tonight. Hopefully, more of the same finals to come.” The World Champion Ashour concluded.

Egyptian duo Ashour and El-Shorbagy emerged as winners on Thursday from their respective duels with Englishmen Nick Matthew and James Willstrop.
