Handball: Egypt wave goodbye to World Championship

The Pharaohs fail to reach the quarter-final despite delivering a fine performance in the second half of their round of 16 game against Slovenia

Egypt have been eliminated from the Handball World Championship second round after Monday's 31-26 defeat against Slovenia.

Slovenia ended the first half with a 19-11 lead but Egypt players produced a superb performance in the second half to close the gap, but they eventually failed to level the score.

The Pharaohs defeated Australia 39-14 on Saturday to reach the tournament's round of 16 after finishing fourth of Group D virture of a superior goal difference over North African rivals Algeria after both sides finished level on three points.

Egypt have failed to go beyond the group stage since 2003. Their best ever position was fourth-place finish in the 2001 edition in France.
