South Africa coach Hugo Broos said he has great respect for a powerful Egypt side but hopes to repeat his 2017 success against the Pharaohs.

Egypt will take on South Africa on Friday in a Group B match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“It’s good to face a team you’ve beaten before,” Broos told the pre-match news conference on Thursday.

The Belgian was referring to the 2017 final, when he led Cameroon to a 2-1 victory over Egypt.

Broos said he was well aware of Egypt’s quality and experience and believed he knew how to deal with the match.

“The Egyptian team is a very good side and has top-quality players such as Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush,” Broos said.

“We know that Egypt have huge experience and an outstanding record, with a competition-high seven titles,” he added. “I know the Egyptian players well and how to play against them.”

Egypt opened their AFCON campaign with a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe on Monday, while South Africa beat Angola by the same score.

Both teams sit top of Group B on equal points.
