On Thursday, 25 January, Global Biking Initiative (GBI) Egypt held their first cycling marathon in 2018 with 50 participants cycling 220 kilometres with organisers Ramy Al-Kably, Khaled Abu-Qurish, Mokhles Gouda and Osama El-Haw.
The cyclers, who came from different cultural backgrounds, including students, councilors and computer programmers, aged from 15 to 55 years.
El-Haw told Al-Ahram Weekly that the marathon mainly aimed at spreading awareness of bike touring and promoting sports tourism as a sector of general tourism.
It also focused on cycling safety, taking advantage of newly opened bike lane on the Soukna road opened earlier this year and one of the longest in the Middle East.
The marathon was guarded by Egyptian police and sponsored by the Egyptian Tourism Authority.
