Last Saturday, the K-Creative Content 2018 conference took place in Cairo, with the aim of invigorating the technology sector in Egypt by introducing the latest technology, software and content Korea has to offer.

It was organised by the Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) in Cairo, in cooperation with the Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunication in Cairo (CIT).

Representatives of the Korean and Egyptian governments, as well as academics and industry leaders, participated in the event.

Director of the KCC Sang Keun Yang said: “We strive to offer the creative event of encounter, experience and knowledge of Korean content industry based on VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality) and others to establish an effective platform to share development experience and innovative ideas that are all culture-based which will nourish the knowledge and widen your scope.”

Korean Ambassador to Egypt Yeo-Cheol Yoon said that the conference is a new activity for the Korean Cultural Centre.

“The KCC in Cairo has been organising several activities, mainly cultural and musical, but today it presents something different, which is Korea’s digital content. We export this content to the entire world to make people’s life easier, by this I mean the VR that will serve as effective media of cultural exchange between Korea and Egypt.”

Participants in the event included advisor to the Egyptian minister of communications and information technology Hossam Osman, former minister of transport and chairman of the Egypt-Korea Friendship Association Alaa Fahmy, and chairman of the Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunication in Cairo Walid Gad.

Presentations were given by research professor at the Centre for Glocal Culture and Society Empathy at University of Seoul Dr. Jung Eun Song, head of the Electronic Games and VR work group at CIT, Maged Farrag, and the CEO of Live-K Corp, Namkwon Cho.

Dr. Jung Eun Song spoke about VR hardware development and its current usage in different domains in everyday life such as architecture design, health care, urban planning, visual arts, drama, music, webtoons (cartoons on the web), archiving, games, and education.

“The high price of this technology didn’t make it accessible to the public, however, today prices are lowered so its usage increased compared to the past.”

From the Egyptian side, Farrag said: “We can see a lot of potentials in our cooperation with the Korean partner in this respect.”

Namkwon Cho pointed out that Egypt's museums, particularly the Grand Egyptian Museum, scheduled to open soon, will benefit from VR, AR and MR (mixed reality).

“We need to discover new means that allow Egypt and Korea to exchange experience in this field.”

On Wednesday the KCC will organise a “Taste of Korea” event, to mark its fourth anniversary.
