Mexican poet José Emilio Pacheco's POCENAR Prize
The winners of the Cervantes Institute’s Poetry Translation (POCENAR) prize are Ali Mohamed Abdel-Latif and Asmaa Gamal Abdel-Nasser from Egypt, Yara Baydoun and Rita Asaad from Lebanon and Belqais Abu Nshesh from Jordan.
The two Egyptians were among the winners of the poetry translation prize for qualifying new translators, launched by the Cervantes Institute in Cairo, Beirut and Amman, in coordination with the Embassy of Spain and the Embassy of Mexico in Lebanon.
The prize is based on selecting poetry by one of the winning poets of the Cervantes Prize for Literature, and this year was dedicated to the Mexican poet José Emilio Pacheco (1939-2014), one of the most prominent poets in Mexico.
The programme aims to qualify translators to present distinguished works while giving them the opportunity to publish them, highlight the work of new translators in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan and encourage dialogue between cultures.
The winners will receive a qualification course in Lebanon whose date will be scheduled later, in which they will attend sessions on the life and work of José Emilio Pacheco, in addition to their participation in a number of roundtable discussions on translation-related issues.
