Egypt’s Minister of Culture Ines Abdel-Dayem and Governor of Assiut Essam Saad have inaugurated on Tuesday an exhibition of the artworks of participants in the “Artisans of Egypt” initiative, launched under the direction of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in 13 governorates.
The initiative aims to train and qualify talented people in traditional handicrafts through specialised programmes implemented by the Ministry of Culture.
Attendees at the inauguration included head of the General Organisation of Culture Palaces (GOCP) Ahmed Awwad.
Abdel-Dayem praised the high quality of the works on display saying, “The Artisans of Egypt initiative has succeeded in creating a new generation of creators in the field of traditional crafts, which is one of the symbols of Egyptian identity.”
Abdel-Dayem assured her support for all coming stages of the initiative aimed to revive and develop traditional crafts in line with the country's strategy to open new fields of work and promote economic projects in order to raise the national income and achieve sustainable development goals.
Awwad explained that the initiative aims to revive the industry of "environmental and handmade crafts" in all governorates of Egypt. He added:
“We are now seeing the handmade products of 13 governorates on display in the first exhibition held at Assiut Culture Palace. It is worthy of note that the exhibition included artistic products of trainees from the governorates of New Valley, Giza, Port Said, Red Sea, Assiut, Sohag, Alexandria, Gharbia, South Sinai, Aswan, and Damietta."
