The event took place at the Grand Nile Tower Hotel, Garden City in Cairo.

The event was attended by the spouses of other ambassadors and diplomats, some members of Indian diaspora and yoga lovers. The yoga session included short sessions on meditation, breathing exercises and yoga postures. Mrs. Gupte mentioned that she herself is a regular practitioner of yoga, also explaining the discipline’s benefits and importance.

Yoga is an ancient Indian tradition that seeks to achieve harmony of the body and mind by combining physical and mental pursuits. Today, yoga is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

Yoga is also very popular in Egypt with a number of enthusiasts and practitioners. The Indian embassy’s Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) organises regular yoga classes at its premises, under the supervision of an Indian yoga instructor.

The celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, or AKAM) is an initiative of the government of India to celebrate and commemorate its independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. The celebrations started on 12 March 2021 and will last till 15 August 2023.

Earlier in the year, the MACIC organised a bicycle tour around Zamalek in Cairo as part of the celebrations.
