A bevy of luminary Egyptian and Russian political figures and diplomats, who witnessed the development of relations between Moscow and Cairo, attended the party.

Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko opened the event, saying that the relations between the two peoples have always been characterized by warmth and special friendship, reaching the level of strategic partnership in recent years.

"Both Russia and Egypt are condemning Israel's war of genocide – supported by the United States and Europe – against the Palestinian people in Gaza," Borisenko confirmed.

Khaled Emara, Egyptian foreign minister deputy, highlighted the rich historical and cultural ties between Russia and Egypt and the broad prospects for bilateral cooperation.

Meanwhile, Maya Manna, RT Arabic’s director, thanked the Egyptian audience for their great interest in the channel and its objective coverage of world actions.

The event featured the premiere of the documentary film “Departure and Return,” sponsored and produced by RT channel.

The film was conceived and prepared by Anisa Mourad and directed by Kareem Naguib, with a soundtrack by Egyptian artists Ahmed and Mohamed Saleh.

According to the RT network, the film tells the inspiring story of Viktor Yakushev, a Soviet military translator who was sent on a mission to Egypt in the period 1971-1973. Then, it shows his return after half a century as a tourist to revisit familiar places in the country which he loved and to which he devoted a large part of his life, learning its culture and dialect.

Through the film, the hero recalls his memories and the most important milestones that supported friendship foundations between Egypt and Russia.

It also takes us on a tour into the hero’s memories of the beautiful past, where he recalls how the Soviet students and the orientalists were fond of the Egyptian cinema. They used to know very well Egyptian actors like Omar Sharif, Faten Hamama, Nadia Lotfy, and Shoukry Sarhan. He also remembers living in officers’ housing in the Madinet Nasr district, where he met one of the Egyptian veterans, aviator General Ahmed El-Mansoury, and talked to him about the past when the Soviets were standing with the Egyptian army in one trench.

The film also tours through the eyes of its hero through the authentic neighbourhoods of Cairo, starting from Khan El-Khalili and ending with the modern neighbourhoods and areas that were witnessing major urban development.

It is worth mentioning that the Russian embassy in Cairo and the Russian House, together with the Dialogue Centre for Political and Media Studies, organized a conference entitled "Russia and Egypt: Eighty Years of Strategic Partnership" on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of establishing strategic relations between the two countries, on 26 August 2023.
