The event took place at the historic Greek School of Cairo in Heliopolis, a landmark built in 1929 that served as a symbolic backdrop to a celebration of shared heritage and strategic partnership. Greek Ambassador to Egypt Nikolaos Papageorgiou welcomed a wide array of guests, including senior officials, diplomats, and public figures from both nations.

The reception was attended by Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Makis Voridis and Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptians Abroad, Ambassador Nabil Habashi.

Also present were prominent Egyptian actresses Laila Elwi and Mimy Gamal.

Addressing guests, Ambassador Papageorgiou described the venue as a living reminder of the Greek community’s long-standing presence in Egypt. “The Greek community's legacy in Egypt is a constant reminder of our shared history,” he said.

Papageorgiou underlined the depth of bilateral cooperation, noting both the historical ties and contemporary alignment on major regional issues.

“Greeks and Egyptians have indeed interacted with each other for millennia,” he said, adding that multilateral frameworks such as the trilateral cooperation mechanism with Cyprus further cement the relationship.

"Today, the Greek-Egyptian bilateral relationship stands as a paradigm of interstate relations. The decision of our leaders to establish a high-level cooperation council is another token in this respect. We look forward to its first inaugural session to take place in Athens later," he added.

He paid tribute to the work of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and its leader, Patriarch Theodoros II, describing the Church’s outreach as a spiritual and cultural bridge across the African continent.

"I want also to express my gratitude to the people from my embassy who have tirelessly worked to make this event happen. Lastly, my special thanks go to actresses Laila Elwi and Mimy Gamal," ambassador Papageorgiou added.

Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Nabil Habashi, in his remarks, described the relationship between Egypt and Greece as both “historic and strategic,” spanning sectors from energy and maritime security to investment and cultural exchange.

One of the most prominent pillars of the partnership, he said, is the Egypt-Greece Electricity Interconnection (GREGY), a project that aims to transmit renewable energy from Egypt to Greece and the broader European grid.

“This project is more than just a cable,” Habashi said. “It is a green corridor and a testament to our shared commitment to the transition to sustainable energy.”

He also praised the bilateral agreement on seasonal labour as a model of humane migration policy, offering legal pathways for Egyptian workers to contribute to the Greek agricultural sector under protections ensuring dignity and mutual benefit.

At the multilateral level, Habashi highlighted the countries’ coordination through forums such as the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum and the trilateral mechanism with Cyprus, which "clearly demonstrates our shared responsibility to promote regional stability, economic integration and energy security," he clarified.

“We look forward to the bright future with the convening of the Supreme Cooperation Council (HLCC) in Athens next May, which will constitute a new chapter in the record of our strategic partnerships,” Habashi concluded.
