The foundation holds workshops in a number of subspecialties of heart diseases and surgeries, with a focus on complex interventions and surgeries.

The most recent two workshops focused on replacing and repairing heart valves, with the participation of more than 40 doctors over the course of two days, and the expansion of coronary arteries with chronic complete obstruction.

Professor Magdi Yacoub, who has developed a procedure for treating babies with congenital heart defects, has written over 1,000 medical articles, co-authored several books, and supervised over 60 researches in tissue engineering, stem cell biology, end stage heart failure, and transplant immunology.

In 2008, Yacoub established the Magdi Yacoub Foundation for Cardiac Diseases to provide free medical services for the less fortunate and to provide scientific, medical and nursing training.

Head of the Cardiology Department at the Aswan Heart Centre Ahmed El-Gwendy, who is in charge of the workshops, says the workshops focus on the use of modern and complex technologies.

Al-Gwendy said the centre aims to hold the workshops periodically to increase the experience and training of cardiologists in Egypt, which will benefit patients and the health system as a whole.

Ahmed Badr, the regional director of Boston Scientific in Egypt and North Africa, says his company has had a partnership with the Magdi Yacoub Heart Center since 2018 to hold workshops for cardiologists. Badr says these workshops deal with topics including treating heart blockages without surgery.
