The IFSO, located in Naples, Italy, is one of the largest medical associations in obesity surgery and includes members from 76 countries, such as the United States, China, England, Germany, and France.
The federation plays a key role in developing and evaluating innovative surgeries to treat obesity and training obesity surgeons worldwide.
Dr Khaled Gawdat, former professor and head of surgery at Ain Shams University, is a pioneer of obesity surgery in Egypt and the Middle East, having established this speciality in Egypt in 1996.
He is also the founder and honorary president of the Egyptian Society for Obesity Surgery, founded in 1999. Dr Gawdat has trained numerous surgeons worldwide in this field, particularly in China, India, and Africa.
This achievement is a global recognition of the efforts made by Dr Gawdat and his colleagues from Egypt and the Middle East to advance this speciality, reflecting Egypt’s prominent position in this field.
Laparoscopic obesity surgeries have been performed in Egypt for 28 years, making it one of the leading countries in this field.
This significant accomplishment enhances the global stance of Egyptian medicine, positioning Egypt among the leading countries in specialized surgeries and ensuring its continued prominence on the international medical stage.
