Gilded mask and painted stele are Egyptian Museum's pieces of the week

The two “objects of the week” on display at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square at present are a gilded death mask and a painted stele.

The 25th Dynasty mask was given to Egypt by a citizen who currently lives in France, and is now on show for the first time.

The stele of Nit-Ptah was discovered at Assasif necropolis on Luxor’s West Bank by the Metropolitan Museum mission in 1915.

It dates to the Middle Kingdom and depicts four members of the same family, two men and two women. The men have been painted in ochre and the women in light cream wash.

The inscriptions over the figures are decorated in black and invoke the god Ptah-Sokaris to provide offerings for the Ka of each member of the family.
